Dept. Seeks 5 Suspected al Qaeda Members [Photos]
3:00 pm - Conflicting email messages concerning the fate of kidnapped U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl were sent to international news media. One email claimed Pearl had been killed, the other demanded a $2 million ransom within 36 hours in return for Pearl's freedom. [See: E-mail claims U.S. reporter in Pakistan killed (CNN)] 5:00 am - Pakistani police reported no success in locating captive U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl, now being held by Islamic militants. Pearl's kidnappers have promised to kill the Wall Street Journal reporter today unless the U.S. releases all Pakistani detainees held at Camp X-ray. The United States has officially refused to comply with the demands. Yesterday, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, said the United States would make "every effort" to rescue Pearl.
