2:00 pm - The White House announced that the Geneva Convention would apply to Taliban detainees being held by the U.S. at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but not to al Qaeda members. According to White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, the action would not extend prisoner of war status to any of the detainees, which would have allowed them to limit their answers to questions under interrogation. Not Confirmed: 4:30 am - Several people, possibly including top al Qaeda leaders were believed to have been killed in a U.S. missile attack launched three days ago in the remote Tora Bora region of Afghanistan. According to an unnamed U.S. official, the missile was fired from a CIA Predator unmanned aerial vehicle. A U.S. special operations team was reported to be on its way to the attack site to confirm the casualties. [See: U.S. missile hits suspected al Qaeda leader (CNN)]
