Dept. Seeks 5 Suspected al Qaeda Members [Photos]
2:30 pm - The U.S. military base at the Kandahar, Afghanistan airport came under heavy small arms fire as helicopters carrying captured al Qaeda and Taliban fighters were about to arrive. U.S. troops detained seven persons suspected of taking part in the attack, while several others escaped. [See: U.S. Troops Attacked at Kandahar Base (Reuters)] 11:00 am - Accused American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh pleaded not guilty to all 10 charges against him in an Alexandria, Virginia, federal court. A hearing will be held on Friday to set an official trial date. Rejecting a request for a delay until November, U.S. District Court Judge T. S. Ellis told defense attorneys to expect to go to trial in August or September. According to U.S. Central Command, all eight crew members were injured, but none of the injuries were listed as life-threatening. Details of the plane's mission were not released.
