1:30 pm - U.S. Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld confirmed that nine U.S. troops had been killed during the fierce battle in eastern Afghanistan that began last Friday. According to Rumsfeld, the number of dead included those killed in the downing of two U.S. Army MH-47 "Chinook" helicopters by enemy fire. "At the last count there were nine Americans; that includes those that were involved in the helicopter crash and there have been several Afghans as well," said Rumsfeld in a news conference. 10:00 am - Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke confirmed that a U.S. Army MH-47 "Chinook" helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan after sustaining enemy ground fire in the ongoing battle in mountains near Gardez. The MH-47 is capable of carrying 32 troops but the Pentagon refused to comment on fatalities or injuries on the crash. However, unconfirmed reports from U.S. military sources in Afghanistan indicate that six U.S. troops were killed and 10 wounded.

Not Confirmed: 9:45 am - A U.S. military helicopter was reported shot down by enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan. An unspecified number of U.S. military personnel on board were reported killed in the crash. The Pentagon refused to confirm or deny the report attributed to an unnamed official of U.S. Central Command in Afghanistan. 6:30 am - The U.S. base near the city of Khost, Afghanistan came under rocket and small arms fire as U.S.-led ground forces resumed their attack on al Qaeda and Taliban holdouts near the eastern city of Gardez. [See: Rockets Hit U.S. Afghan Base; Ground Attacks Resume (Reuters)]'
