According to Rumsfeld, the number of dead included those killed in the downing of two U.S. Army MH-47 "Chinook" helicopters by enemy fire. "At the last count there were nine Americans; that includes those that were involved in the helicopter crash and there have been several Afghans as well," said Rumsfeld in a news conference. The MH-47 is capable of carrying 32 troops but the Pentagon refused to comment on fatalities or injuries on the crash. However, unconfirmed reports from U.S. military sources in Afghanistan indicate that six U.S. troops were killed and 10 wounded. Not Confirmed: 9:45 am - A U.S. military helicopter was reported shot down by enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan. An unspecified number of U.S. military personnel on board were reported killed in the crash. The Pentagon refused to confirm or deny the report attributed to an unnamed official of U.S. Central Command in Afghanistan.
