7:00 pm - President Bush announced he would send U.S. special envoy Anthony Zinni back to the Middle East in an attempt to calm escalating violence between Israel and Palestine and to investigate a peace plan put forth by Saudi Arabia. [See: Bush Sends Envoy to Mideast to Try to Stop Violence (Reuters)]

3:00 am - The U.S. resumed heavy bombing by B-52s of Taliban and al Qaeda positions in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military spokesman Major Brian Hilferty, U.S. forces had killed about 100 enemy forces in ground fighting and that there were now about 1,000 allied forces involved in Operation Anaconda.
