6:00 pm - Stopping short of declaring Iraq the next front in the war against terrorism, President Bush today declared Iraqi President Saddam Hussein a "problem" and stated, "we are going to deal with him." Bush stated that the U.S. would not take any action in Iraq without consulting with other coalition-member nations. "[T]he first stage is to consult with our allies and friends and that is exactly what we're doing," said the president. [See: Bush: 'We Are Going to Deal' with Saddam (Reuters)]

7:00 am - Both U.S. and Afghan military officials confirmed they had routed remaining al Qaeda and Taliban holdouts from cave complexes in eastern Afghanistan and were chasing down rebels who had fled the battle. "It is a 60 square mile area. We have seized the majority and have control of the majority of the (Shahi Kot) valley," said U.S. military spokesman Major Bryan Hilferty from Bagram. "There are less than 100 (al Qaeda and Taliban) left." [See: U.S.-Afghan Troops Proclaim Victory, Pursue Rebels (Reuters)]
