2:30 pm - Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld announced that the Pentagon was nearing completion of plans to hold military tribunals for prisoners of the war in Afghanistan. Rumsfeld stated that President Bush had made no decision as to which of the 500 prisoners would be tried in military court. "We have, however, pretty much completed the work as to how the commissions generally will be conducted in the event someone is ultimately appointed to be tried," he said. 2:00 am - U.S. troops searched the Shahi Kot battlefield in eastern Afghanistan for remaining groups of al Qaeda and Taliban fighters still hiding in caves. According to Major Bryan Hilferty, "three or four" enemy troops had fought with the U.S. cleanup team Thursday night. "They managed to escape but it indicates that any rebels left are in these small numbers," said Hilferty. [See: Afghan Battle Over but Rebels Still Pose Threat (Reuters)]
