3:00 pm - Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld announced that the U.S. military would begin training a new Afghan national army. Rumsfeld stated that from 125 to 150 U.S. special forces troops would work to provide ""basic soldier skills" to Afghan national and border forces. 4:30 am - Highlighting ongoing power struggles between Afghan warlords, Afghan authorities arrested two soldiers trained by U.S. forces they suspect of attacking the security chief of the Khost province. A spokesman for the governor of the Khost province told reporters that the men had been trained by U.S. military advisers. [See: U.S.-Linked Afghan Soldiers Arrested for Attack (Reuters)]
