10:30 - Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that the U.S. government would seek the death penalty against Zacharias Moussaoui, the first criminal defendant charged in connection with the Sept. 11 terrorist attack against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Prosecutors believe the French-born Moussaoui would have been the 5th hijacker of United Flight 93, the only September 11 flight with only four hijackers on board. The trial of Moussaoui is expected to being this fall in Alexandria, Virginia. [See: U.S. to Seek Death for Sept. 11 Suspect Moussaoui (Reuters)]

9:00 am - U.S. military officials reported that one U.S. special operations soldier was killed and another wounded in the apparent explosion of a land mine south of Kandahar in Afghanistan. "The service member was killed after apparently stepping on an enemy ground-placed munition," stated Central Command spokesman Sgt. Matthew Smith.
