USAMA BIN LADEN - FBI Ten Most-Wanted poster

Chronology: All time shown below are approximate Eastern Daylight Times.

Monday, April 1, 2002

NOTE: Reports from news sources involving movements or operations of United States military personnel NOT confirmed by named U.S. government officials will be labeled as such.

1:30 pm - U.S. Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld refused to comment on reports that Abu Zubaydah, a suspected high-ranking al Qaeda member, possibly 2nd in command to Osama bin Laden had been taken in to custody by the U.S. after being captured in Pakistan. "I don't think there is any doubt but a man named Abu Zubaydah is a close associate of UBL's (Osama bin Laden), and if not the No. 2, very close to the No. 2 person in the organization. I think that's well-established," Rumsfeld said. "I have absolutely nothing to say about the subject however." [See: Rumsfeld Declines Comment on Al Qaeda's Zubaydah (Reuters)]

NOT confirmed 10:00 am - An unnamed U.S. official reported to Reuters that Pakistan was preparing to turn 20 suspected al Qaeda fighters over to the U.S., including one man who may have been a top aide to Osama bin Laden. [See: Suspected Bin Laden Aide May Be Handed Over to U.S. (Reuters)]
