U.S. War on Terrorism Last Standing Steel Beam Removed From Ground Zero (Reuters) - Recovery and cleanup operations at "ground zero" came to an official end with a ceremonial removal of the last standing steel beam from remains of the World Trade Center in New York City. Over 19,000 body parts were recovered from the rubble where some 2,800 people died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. U.S. Sets Up New Nerve Centre for Afghan War (Reuters) - The U.S. military announced it had established a new high-tech command post at the airport in Kandahar to oversee future operations against remaining pockets of al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan. Report: Taliban, Al Qaeda Plotting in Pakistan (Reuters) - The New York Times reported that leaders of the Taliban and al Qaeda had reassembled in Pakistan and were plotting to disrupt the election of Afghanistan's permanent government, scheduled in June.
