Also today: Trading on both the New York and NASDAQ stock exchanges reported that they will reopen for trading at 9:30 am EDT on Monday. After suspending trading on Tuesday, the day of the attacks, the markets have been closed for an unprecedented four days.

10:58 pm - The Associated Press reported that the U.S. commercial airlines planned to request from $10 to $20 billion form the government in order to help the industry recover from losses sustained because of the terrorists attacks that closed airports for days. 5:45 pm - The USS Cole, heavily damaged by an Oct. 12, 2000 terrorist bombing that killed 17 of its crew members, was set afloat after repairs for the first time today. [See: USS Cole relaunched with little fanfare (CNN)]

3:50 pm - Afghanistan's Taliban government stated that it would continue to protect Osama bin Laden and would retaliate against any country allowing the U.S. to use its airspace for attacks against Afghanistan. (See: Afghan Taliban Insist Must Protect Bin Laden (Reuters)]

1:00 pm - Appearing on NBC's "Meet the "Press," Vice President Cheney revealed that following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush had authorized pilots of U.S. fighter jets to shoot down any further hijacked airliners spotted over Washington if they failed to turn away. "The president made the decision that if the plane would not divert, if they wouldn't pay any attention to instructions to move away from the city, as a last resort, our pilots were authorized to take them out," stated Cheney. 1:00 pm - Secretary of State Powell stated that the 1976 law prohibiting U.S. personnel from "engaging in, or conspiring to engage in assassinations" is now under review. [See: Powell Says Assassination Policy Under Review (Reuters)]

11:00 am - New York Mayor Giuliani announced that 180 people had been confirmed dead in the World Trade Center attack. Positive identification of 115 of the dead had been established. The number of people reported missing had increased to 5,087.

6:40 am - Reuters reported that Osama bin Laden had denied responsibilities for the attacks against the United States. "I am residing in Afghanistan. I have taken an oath of allegiance (to Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar) which does not allow me to do such things from Afghanistan," bin Laden said through an aid. 6:40 am - CNN reported that Pakistan, in an effort to prevent U.S. military strikes against Afghanistan, have given Afghanistan's Taliban government three days to turn over Osama bin Laden. (See: Taliban given three days to hand over bin Laden (CNN)]
