One week ago today, America changed forever

Also Today: The U.S. State Department ordered all of its non-essential personnel and families to leave Pakistan and warned all Americans remaining in Pakistan to be wary and maintain a low profile.

  • The death toll from the Pentagon attack reached 188 people, including 64 on the jetliner. 
  • Over 5,200 people were listed as missing at the World Trade Center site, with 201 confirmed fatalities.
  • New York Mayor Giuliani stated that little substantial chance remained of finding survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center towers. However, the effort remained classified as recovery and rescue mission.
  • After a short recovery, stocks closed slightly lower than yesterday.

10:45 pm - President Bush signed into law the bill H.R. 2888, making available $40 billion in emergency funds for disaster assistance, for anti-terrorism initiatives, and the congressional resolution S.J. RES. 23, authorizing the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.

8:00 pm - Afghanistan's Opposition Northern Alliance stated that the Taliban would never turn over Osama bin Laden and warned the U.S. not to believe Pakistan's promises to support U.S. efforts to punish bin Laden. 7:20 pm - The Chicago Tribune reported that hijackers may have been onboard additional flights on the morning of the attacks in New York City and the Pentagon. [See: Report: Hijackers May Have Been on Other Flights (Reuters)]

6:00 pm - The FBI issued a warning to U.S. firefighters that terrorist might steal their trucks and use them as "rolling bombs." The FBI recommended that fire departments increase security of their vehicles [See: FBI warns terrorists may steal fire trucks (CNN)]

5:00 pm - Attorney General Ashcroft announced that the Justice Department would create an anti-terrorism task force to coordinate with the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and other federal and local law enforcement groups.

5:00 pm - Attorney General Ashcroft announced that new Immigration and Naturalization regulations had been signed increasing the time that illegal immigrants can be kept in custody without being charged with a crime from 24 to 48 hours or longer in emergency situations.

1:50 pm - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban government began calling for volunteers in fighting a possible "jihad," or holy war against the United States. [See: Afghan Taliban Appeals for Volunteers for Holy War (Reuters)]

12:45 pm - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban government stated that, while they could not rule out Osama bin Laden as the person responsible for the terrorist attacks on the U.S. of Sept. 11, 2001, they would require proof of his guilt before considering handing him over for trial in a third country. 11:50 am - President Bush spoke to the nation from the White House to express his thanks to Americans who had donated over $55 million toward aid for the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and to encourage the people to continue to give. The president announced a new Web site - LibertyUnites.org - http://www.libertyunites.org - where donations to over two dozen charities could be made online.

11:45 am - U.S. and European stock regulators began investigating the possibility that Osama bin Laden and his followers may have profited from last weeks terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by "short-selling" large volumes of airline and re-insurance company stock options shortly before the attacks.

9:30 am - CNN reported that Israel had called a halt to all offensive operations against Palestine.

9:30 am - One-hour after the opening bell, U.S. stock prices were holding their own to increasing slightly, after falling to three-year lows on Monday.

8:48 am - All of New York City stood still and quite for one minute in honor of the more than 5,000 people missing and feared dead in the terrorist attacks that had occurred exactly one week earlier. [See: Honoring Dead, New York Marks Attack Moment (Reuters)]

8:40 am - Commerce Secretary Donald Evans told reporters that President Bush is considering providing direct financial aid to help the airline industry recover from losses due to the terrorist attacks. [See: Bush Considers Direct Aid to Airlines (Reuters)]
