7:40 pm - Pentagon officials said they would target illegal drug production sites in Afghanistan in an effort to cut off the Taliban's funding source. According to the CIA, Afghanistan led the world in illegal production of opium. [See: U.S. considering targeting Taliban drug trade (CNN)] 5:00 pm - Officials of the Pentagon and State Department told CNN that would offer proof this week that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 were the responsibility of Osama bin Laden. [See: U.S. readying to present proof against bin Laden (CNN)] 4:50 pm - Ending a long losing streak, U.S. stock markets closed up for the first time since the terrorist attacks. Analysts stated that the gains were probably a result of investors beginning to snap up bargains created by days of selling. [See: Stocks Snap Losing Streak, Look to Brighter Days (Reuters)] 1:10 pm - Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, stated that the Taliban was mobilizing 300,000 additional troops to defend against U.S. attacks. U.S. defense official have place the maximum strength of the Taliban at no more than 45,000 troops. "It is unacceptable that America issues ultimatums to the Islamic world either to listen to America's message or accept destruction," stated Omar. [See: Leave Islam alone, Taliban leader warns U.S. (CNN)] 12:45 pm - The federal government announced it will compensate persons injured in the Sept. 11 attacks, as well as families of the dead, if they agree not to sue the airlines for damages. Appearing at a press conference with New York Mayor Giuliani, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-NY) stated, "If you were a clerk who earned $30,000 a year and you had 20 years left, you'll get a lump sum payment of $30,000 a year for the next 20 years, plus the pain and suffering, plus the pension." [See: Federal deal ensures victims' compensation (CNN)] 11:00 am - The Qatari-based news channel Al Jazeera, received a fax purportedly sent by Osama bin Laden in which bin Laden urges the people of Pakistan to "resist the invasion of the American crusader forces in Pakistan and Afghanistan." [See: News agency receives purported bin Laden message (CNN)] 10:00 am - Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, issued a statement saying that the U.S. could not end its war on terrorism by killing Osama bin Laden. Omar stated that the U.S. would continue to face threats of terrorist attacks unless it withdrew all forces from the Persian Gulf and ended its involvement in the Palestinian crisis. [See: Taliban: Killing Bin Laden Would Not End 'Terrorism' (Reuters)] 10:00 am - New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced that the number people reported missing at the World Trade Center site remained at 6,453 while the number confirmed dead had increased to 276. 9:30 am - President Bush announced he had signed an executive order freezing the assets of Osama bin Laden held in the U.S. and prohibiting financial transactions with 26 other organizations and individuals linked to terrorism. Bush referred to the action as creating a "financial most-wanted list." The capture marked the second straight day of advances by the Alliance against the Taliban.
