Investigation (CNN) Also today: The number of persons confirmed dead at the World Trade Center site reached 306 with 238 of the dead identified. Due to double reporting, the number of people now listed as missing was lowered to 5.960.
6:50 pm - Some 10,000 people gathered in a peaceful anti-war protest in the nation's capital, a few blocks from the White House. "War is not the answer because the events on Sept. 11 were not the first battle in the war. This has been an escalating cycle of violence," stated rally organizer Brian Becker. [See: Anti-War Rally Draws Thousands to Washington (Reuters)] 4:30 pm - CNN reported that government investigators had tied at least four of the 19 hijackers believed to have carried out the September 11 terrorist attacks to Osama bin Laden's terrorist training camps in Afghanistan. [See: Source: Hijacking suspects linked to Afghanistan (CNN)] 11:30 am - In his weekly radio address to the nation, President Bush outlined steps taken so far in Americas war against terrorism and stated "America will act deliberately and decisively, and the cause of freedom will prevail," in what the President again referred to as a war of "good vs. evil." [See: Bush calls for 'patience and resolve' (CNN)] 7:20 am - Qatar's al-Jazeera television reported that members of a U.S. special forces team had been seized by Afghan security forces near the Iran-Afghanistan border. The Taliban's defense minister, Mullah Obaidullah Akhund denied the reports, stating "It is totally wrong, we deny this news that they have come to our areas." Pentagon officials stated they had no reason to believe the reports and refused to comment on conflicting reports coming out of the area. "We've seen the stories and we are not going to get into the habit of commenting on every story that comes out of the region," stated the Pentagon official. [See: Pentagon, Taliban dispute capture of commandos (CNN)] 4:30 am - Taliban leaders agreed to more talks with Pakistan leaders. The agreement came during the Friday meeting between the Taliban and Islamic clerics from Pakistan. While the Taliban refused to turn over Osama bin Laden, they did agree to to continue negotiations.
