Detailing Allied Attacks (CNN) Also Today: President Bush will speak to the nation tonight in a televised address beginning at 8:00 pm EST. The President is expected to give updates on homeland security and ask for the assistance of the people in fighting terrorism in the United States.
8:30 pm - President Bush addressed the nation, praising Americans for their response to terrorists attacks. The President also outlined citizens' responsibilities in the war on terrorism. [See: Bush: 'We have shown America is a great nation' (CNN)] 10:20 am - Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced that three Japanese warships would sail on Friday headed for the Indian Ocean in support of the war on terrorism in Afghanistan. The sailing will mark the first time since the end of World War II that Japanese warships have operated outside Japanese territorial waters. [See: Japanese warships set to sail (CNN)] 6:00 am - Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf called for the United States to suspend all bombing missions in Afghanistan during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. "It is being perceived in the whole world...as if this were a war against the poor, miserable and innocent people of Afghanistan," Musharraf stated at a Paris press conference. [See: Pakistan's Musharraf Says Bombing Must Stop (Reuters)] 5:15 am - Northern Alliance leaders stated they planned to conduct a major offensive against the Taliban-held town of Mazar-e-Sharif on Thursday. Mazar-e-Sharif is in rugged northern Afghanistan and considered a key location in the Taliban's supply line. [See: Emboldened Afghan Opposition Targets Strategic City (Reuters)] 1:00 am - A U.S. sailor was reported to have fallen overboard from the carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) in the Indian Ocean. A search was underway. The Kitty Hawk is serving as part of the fleet supporting the allied attacks in Afghanistan. The name of the missing sailor was not released.
