6:15 pm - Investigators found three more areas of anthrax contamination inside the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. The entire office building has been closed since Oct. 17 due to anthrax contamination. The latest traces of the bacteria were found in the offices of Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, Sen. Bob Graham of Florida and Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho. [See: More Anthrax Found in Senate Office Building (Reuters)]

1:30 pm - The White House dismissed claims that Osama bin Laden possessed nuclear weapons. According to National Security Council spokesman Sean McCormack, the White House was aware that bin Laden had been seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, but had not yet done so. "And we will do everything we can to prevent his acquiring these weapons or the materials for these weapons," stated McCormack. [See: White House dismisses bin Laden nuclear threat (CNN)]

11:30 am - The Northern Alliance claimed to have taken control of four more districts of Afghanistan from Taliban forces. [See: Afghan Opposition Claim Capture Four Provinces (Reuters)]

10:45 am - President Bush told the General Assembly of the U.N. that it was time for action against international terrorists. "The time for sympathy has now passed. The time for action has now arrived," stated the president in his first address to the U.N. since being elected. 7:00 am - Taliban Defense Minister Obaidullah Akhund confirmed to Reuters that the Northern Alliance had taken the strategically located town of Mazar-e-Sharif near Afghanistan's northern border with Uzbekistan. Akhund also indicated the Alliance had taken control of a province in southern Afghanistan. [See: City and Province Fall to Foes of Taliban (Reuters)]

3:00 am - Interviewed by a Pakistani newspaper, Osama bin Laden claimed his al Qaeda terror network possessed nuclear and chemical weapons and would not hesitate to use them against the U.S. [See: Bin Laden makes nuclear threat (CNN)
