Also Today: Aided by allied bombing, the Northern Alliance advanced to within four miles (6 kilometers) of the Afghan capital of Kabul and captured the western city of Herat from the Taliban. The U.S. has asked the Alliance not to attack Kabul until more definite plans can be made for a post-Taliban government. [Details on CNN]

6:30 - The bodies of all 255 persons on board American Airlines flight 587 were reported to have been recovered from the wreckage of the Airbus A300 that crashed shortly after takeoff from Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Speaking at a press conference, New York Mayor Giuliani stated that from six to eight people who had been on the ground in the vicinity of the crash were still reported missing. 5:00 pm - New York Gov. George Pataki stated in a press conference that the pilot of the American Airlines Airbus flight 587 had dumped fuel over Jamaica Bay just before the plane crashed into a Queens neighborhood, apparently killing all 255 people on board. "We have been advised that that the pilot did dump fuel over Jamaica Bay before the crash, which is consistent with the pilot having some belief that there was a significant mechanical failure on the plane," stated Pataki. 3:30 pm - New York Mayor Giuliani stated at a press conference that 161 bodies had been recovered from the scene of the crash of an American Airlines Airbus A300 in the Queens Borough of New York. Giuliani reported that all fires related to the crash had been controlled. No evidence of terrorism in the incident had been found, stated Mayor Giuliani. Kennedy International airport remained closed to departing flights only. All other New York area airports had re-opened. All New York City bridges and tunnels had also re-opened.

2:25 - Both LaGuardia and Newark airports were re-opened. Kennedy International remained closed to departing traffic.

1:30 pm - NTSB chairwoman Marion Blakey announced investigators had recovered the flight data recorder from American Airlines flight 587 had been recovered from the crash scene. Blakey stated that no evidence had been found to indicate the crash had been the result of terrorism. "All information we have currently is that this is an accident," she said. The cockpit voice recorder had not yet been found, according to Blakey.

12:00 noon - White House spokesman Ari Fleischer stated that the cause of a crash of an American Airlines Airbus A300 in the Queens Borough of New York remained unknown. According to Fleischer, the lead agency in the investigation remained the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the crash was not being investigated as a criminal act. No evidence of terrorism had been discovered, stated Fleischer. There had been no threat to air travel prior to the crash, according to Fleischer.

9:50 am - Reports confirmed that the plane involved in the crash in the Queens Borough of New York was not a Boeing 767 as first reported, but an Airbus A300. The flight, AA587, was departing JFK airport, bound for Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. The plane carried 246 passengers and a crew of nine. Mayor Giuliani reported that 44 firetrucks and 200 firefighters had been dispatched to the scene. [See: American Airlines jet crashes in New York (CNN)]

9:40 am - All three major New York City airports, JKF, Newark and LaGuardia were closed to all air traffic due to the crash of an American Airlines 767 in Queens. In addition, all bridges and tunnels serving New York City were closed.

9:20 am - An American Airlines Boeing 767 was reported to have crashed in the Far Rockaway section of the Queens Borough of New York City. The plane was thought to have been in the process of landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, about five miles from the crash site. At least four buildings on the ground were reported to be on fire. Mayor Giuliani called for the mobilization of all emergency services. No further details were available. -- Later reports confirmed the plane to be an American Airlines Airbus A300 with 249 passengers and crew of nine.

7:00 am - The Taliban and Northern Alliance exchanged artillery barrages along the approaches to the Afghan capital of Kabul as rumors spread the the Northern Alliance had captured the western town of Herat. 6:30 - The Northern Alliance claimed to have overrun two rows of Taliban trenches guarding Kabul and that 1,300 Taliban fighters had deserted. [See: Afghan Opposition Says Taliban Trenches Captured (Reuters)]
