6:30 pm - Declaring the noose around Osama bin Laden to be "narrowing," President Bush stated that the number of people in Afghanistan willing to help in the search for the terrorist leader was growing. "The more territory we gain, the more success there is on the ground, the more people we've got looking to help us in our mission," said President Bush. [See: Bush Says 'Noose' Narrows Around Bin Laden (Reuters)] 4:30 pm - Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld at a press conference stated that while the Taliban are retreating throughout Afghanistan, the hunt for terrorist leader Osama bin Laden remained far from over. "As enemy leaders become fewer and fewer that does not necessarily mean that the task will become easier." stated Rumsfeld. "People can hide in caves for long periods, and this will take time." The journalists from Italy, Australia and Afghanistan were reportedly traveling without protection from Jalalabad to the Afghan capital, Kabul when they were stopped by an unidentified group of gunmen. The area where the incident took place is under the control of the Northern Alliance. [See: Four journalists killed in Afghanistan, Italian official says (CNN)] 7:50 am - U.S. airstrikes hit Taliban positions in the continuing battle for the Afghan town of Konduz, the last Taliban-held area in northern Afghanistan. [See: Afghan refugees fleeing Konduz (CNN)] 7:15 am - CNN reported that a high-ranking Taliban leader and associate of Taliban top leader Mullah Mohammad Omar had bolted and was now siding with Pashtun tribesmen in Kandahar. [See: Source: Senior Taliban official switches sides (CNN)] 7:00 am - The U.S. accused Iraq, North Korea and possibly Iran of violations of an international ban on development of biological weapons. U.S. Under-Secretary for Arms Control and International Security John Bolton said Baghdad had "developed, produced and stockpiled biological warfare agents and weapons" in defiance of a 1972 treaty.
