Detailing Allied Attacks (CNN) 6:40 pm - US Attorney General John Ashcroft signed an agreement with Canada designed to prevent terrorists from crossing the border, while not impairing trade. [See: U.S.-Canada Agree to Tighten Border Security (Reuters)] 5:00 pm - Director of Homeland Security Tom Ridge announced that in response to increasing activity suggesting possible terrorist attacks, the American public was being placed on alert. Ridge stated that the FBI notifying U.S. law enforcement agencies to be on high alert. No information regarding the specific time or nature of these new threats was available, according to Ridge. [See: Ridge issues new security alert (CNN)] 1:50 pm - Israeli F-16s attacked the headquarters of the Palestinian civil police and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's offices in the West Bank town of Jenin, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The attack came shortly after Israeli helicopter gunships destroyed two helicopters a Arafat's Gaza City headquarters. [See: Israeli jets strike West Bank town (CNN)] 10:50 am - The White House responded to Israeli missile attacks against Palestinian-ruled Gaza City by stating that Israel has a right to defend itself. "Obviously Israel has the right to defend itself and the president understands that clearly," stated White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. [See: Israel Has Right to Defend Itself, White House Says (Reuters)] 9:45 am - CNN reported that Israeli helicopter gunships attacked the helipad, helicopters and troops protecting the Gaza City headquarters of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Up to 10 missiles were fired in the attack that may have come in response to the three terrorist suicide-bombings that killed 25 people in Haifa and Jerusalem, Israel over the weekend. Arafat was not in the buildings at the time of the attack. [See: Taliban Threaten Last Stand, Opponents Haggle (Reuters)] 5:30 am - Supported by U.S. bombers, Afghan tribal fighters closed in on Kandahar, the last known Taliban stronghold. In Washington, Secretary of State Powell stated that it was only a matter of time until the Taliban fell and Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda leaders were found.
