Detailing Allied Attacks (CNN) Also Today: The Washington Post reported that U.S. intelligence officials believe Osama bin Laden and this al Qaeda network may have taken "great strides" in their efforts to build a crude radiological weapon. While not a true nuclear bomb, the so called "dirty bomb" would use conventional explosives to spread deadly radioactive material over an area as large as several city blocks. The solider was reported to be in stable condition after being shot in the shoulder. [See: U.S. Soldier Shot and Wounded in Afghanistan (Reuters)] 7:00 pm - Anti-Taliban mujahedeen fighters engaged al Qaeda gunmen near the Tora Bora mountain range, the current suspected hideout of Osama bin Laden. [See: Anti-Taliban troops in gunbattle with al Qaeda (CNN)] 4:00 pm - The Pentagon confirmed that U.S. Marines were in action to prevent fleeing Taliban and al Qaeda fighters from escaping as anti-Taliban forces advanced on Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. [See: Pentagon Says Marines Move to Help Cut Off Kandahar (Reuters)] 11:30 am - President Bush announced the seizure by federal officials of the four U.S. offices of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. According to Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and Attorney General John Ashcroft, the Texas-based foundation was, in fact, a money-raising front for the Palestinian militant terrorist group Hamas, which claimed responsibility for recent suicide bombings that killed 26 people in Israel. [See: Feds Seize Offices with Hamas Link (Reuters)] 11:00 am - Anti-Taliban commanders stated that Osama bin Laden's top deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri had been injured in recent U.S. bombing raids near Tora Bora, a suspected hiding place of bin Laden's. No details al-Zawahiri's injuries were stated. 7:30 - CNN reported that U.S. airstrikes continued around Kandahar in southern Afghanistan as U.S. troop levels in the vicinity of the last Taliban stronghold in the country continued to grow. 7:00 am - For the second straight day, Israeli helicopter gunships and fighter jets launched attacks into the Palestinian West Bank. A building adjacent to the headquarters of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in the city of Ramallah was struck by missiles.
