September 11 Remembrance: With the playing of the National Anthem at at 8:46 a.m. EST, exactly three months to the moment after the first hijacked airliner struck the World Trade Center, President Bush will lead a remembrance ceremony at the White House. Bush has asked nations around the world to join in the ceremony. "We will never forget the survivors, the children, the devastated families. ... And we will never forget the victims who came from more than 80 countries, and many races and religions," stated the White House in a statement released on Monday.

11:00 pm - Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda fighters holding out in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan agreed to surrender on Wednesday. The commander of Alliance forces state that al Qaeda fighters who did surrender would be handed over to the United Nations. All Alliance and U.S. attacks were ordered stopped until tomorrow morning. 1:45 pm - CNN reported that a major fire was consuming a large section of the shopping and commercial district of Kabul, Afghanistan. The was apparently having caused accidentally by workers using warming fires during the freezing Afghan night. No further details were available.

1:20 pm - U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the first official charges filed in relationship to the September 11 terrorist attacks. Zacarias Moussaoui, a French citizen was charged with six counts of conspiracy in the attacks. [See: U.S. Brings First Key Charges in Sept. 11 Probe (Reuters)]

6:40 am - CNN reported that Northern Alliance troops had given al Qaeda fighters in the Tora Bora mountains until 10:30 p.m. EST to surrender or face death. Alliance troops were reported to have captured the main al Qaeda base at Tora Bora. [See: Opposition tells al Qaeda to surrender or face death (CNN)]

6:00 am - The Northern Alliance reported having made major gains in fighting against al Qaeda fighters entrenched in the rugged Tora Bora Mountains in eastern Afghanistan, the suspected location of Osama bin Laden. [See: Alliance makes gains against al Qaeda in mountains (CNN)]
