Also Today: U.S. Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld is visiting Afghanistan. Rumsfeld is meeting today with incoming Afghan leader Hamid Karzai. [Details on CNN]

  • Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld stated the U.S. had gained important intelligence from a captured al Qaeda site thought to have been used for development of weapons of mass destruction near Camp Rhino in southern Afghanistan. [Details on CNN]

2:30 pm - Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, in a televised appearance, called for an end to all attacks on Israelis, especially suicide bombings. However, Arafat, under intense pressure from world leaders to round up terrorists in his country, also demanded that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon must end Israel's "brutal war" against Palestinian Authority. 1:00 pm - Secretary of State Colin Powell stated that while Osama bin Laden may have escaped into Pakistan, U.S. forces were in hot pursuit. Powell also expressed confidence that Pakistani forces would assist in his bin Laden's capture. [See: U.S. in 'Hot Pursuit' of Elusive Bin Laden (Reuters)

7:30 am - A senior anti-Taliban Afghan commander told reporters that all al Qaeda forces in the mountains near Tora Bora had been defeated, but that Osama bin Laden was not in the area. [See: Afghan Commander Says Bin Laden Not in Tora Bora (Reuters)]

7:00 am - Three U.S. Marines were injured during mine-clearing operations at the recently occupied Kandahar airport. A spokesman for U.S. Central Command told reporters that the wounds were not life-threatening. [See: U.S. Marines injured in mine-clearing accident (CNN)]\
