The magazine had raised the ire of many readers by suggesting it might bestow the award on Osama bin Laden. [Details on CNN] 4:15 pm - A White House official confirmed that there were explosives in the shoes of a man who threatened to blow up an American Airlines transatlantic flight yesterday. The man was overpowered by passengers and crew of American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris, France, to Miami Florida when he was seen trying to set his shoes on fire. The FBI is investigating the man's identity and motive. [See: Man in jet scare had explosive, official says (CNN)] 3:30 pm - Newsweek reported that John Walker, the American who fought for the Taliban lived for a time in an al Qaeda camp and met briefly with Osama bin Laden. According to Newsweek, "the disciple basked in the glow of his master." [See: Walker Met with Bin Laden, Newsweek Says (Reuters)] 7:30 am - U.S. Marines continue scouring the bombed-out mountains in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan for Osama bin Laden -- dead or alive. U.S. General Tommy Franks, commander of Afghan operations stated, "He can be in Tora Bora or in that area dead, he can be somewhere else in Afghanistan and still alive or perhaps he may have gotten over into Pakistan." Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday expressed his opinion that bin Laden had been killed by U.S. bombing. "I anticipate another attack and try as much as I can to figure out what it will be -- where it will be, are we prepared for it, are we doing all the things that we can do to prepare for it," Giuliani told a BBC interviewer.
