By a 97-0 vote the Senate approved H.R. 3525 - the Enhanced Border Security Act of 2001. The $3.2 billion bill provides for more and better trained border patrol agents, and modernization of the INS computer system used for tracking immigrants. The Senate killed a Bush administration proposal to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Republican supporters failed to get the 60 votes necessary to end debate on the measure, which was proposed as an amendment to the Energy Policy Act. The Senate has overwhelmingly approved the $3.5 billion Equal Protection of Voting Rights Act, calling for one of the largest overhauls of the U.S. voting system in history. The bill calls for states to upgrade their voting equipment and registration procedures by 2004, and for implementation of national voting standards by 2006. The bill must first be reconciled with a similar $2.6 billion bill passed last year by the House before it can be sent to President Bush.Senate Passes Campaign Finance Reform (3/20/02)

The Senate today passed an amendment to S. 517, The Energy Policy Act effectively killing a required 50 percent increase in fuel efficiency standards for cars and sport-utility vehicles. The amendment, sponsored by Michigan Democrat Carl Levin and Missouri Republican Christopher Bond, leaves setting fuel efficiency standards to the discretion of the Department of Transportation.
