Pat Buchanan on the Issues
Other Candidates

Abortion
In America today the most common
medical procedure is not a tonsillectomy, but an abortion. Unborn children are
being exterminated at the rate of 1.3 million a year. Their bodies are being
bought up for medical research. I will use the Bully Pulpit to fight the
Culture of Death and appoint only pro-life judges to the Supreme Court. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Budget/Economy
Buchanan wants the government to
intervene in the economy to save American jobs. He heaps scorn on free trade and
foreigners alike. He wants to withdraw American troops from more or less
everywhere. And if the Chinese do not do what he wants, they will have sold
"their last pair of chopsticks in the US." Buchanan embodies a
reactionary conservatism which thinks that "America First" can be
achieved by shoving everyone else to the back. -- The Economist 9/18/99
Civil Rights
Government-sponsored prejudice-no
matter how benign its original purpose-belongs in the same graveyard as the late
Jim Crow. A true respect for civil rights requires that we put an end to all
racial, ethnic, and gender entitlements. No quotas, no set asides, no forced
busing, no mandatory hiring, no affirmative action. As President, I will
eliminate all forms of discrimination in federal agencies, including reverse
discrimination. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Crime
A Buchanan Administration will
end the legal assault on American business from tort reform at both the state
and local level. Punitive and compensatory damages should be related to actual
harm done-and the loser should be made to pay the legal fees of the winner. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Defense
The purpose of US armed forces is
to fight and win Americas wars, not meddle in foreign quarrels that have
nothing to do with Americas vital interests. The lives of US Soldiers will be
put at risk only when Americas vital interests are at stake. -- www.gopatgo2000.org

Education
Parents everywhere are fighting
for the hearts and minds of their own children. We must shut down the Department
of Education, and return authority to the states and to the people. --
www.iac.net/~davcam/pat_issu.html
Environment
As President I will require
Congress to vote on every endangered species and compensate property owners when
their land is seized and converted into protected habitat. We want to see the
bald eagle and grizzly bear survive, but unelected bureaucrats must not be
allowed to violate property rights in the process. -- www.gopatgo2000.org

Foreign Policy
"We need a foreign policy
that will get us out of all these foreign entanglements and quarrels that are
poisoning our politics and assuring the US will be involved in wars in the
future that are none of our business," -- Boston Globe 9/20/99
Free Trade
The WTO is more than a trade
organization. It is an embryonic institution of world government, which asserts
the right to veto laws democratically passed by the US. For example, if we
Americans want to defend sea turtles and porpoises, that is our business. Who
are these international bureaucrats to tell us we cant do it? This is the
beginning of world government, and people are resisting it to maintain their own
national identity. -- Good Morning America 12/1/99
Government Reform
We are an overregulated,
overtaxed, and overgoverned society. As President, I will begin to roll back
this regulation juggernaut by dismantling the Dept. of Education, Dept. of
Energy, Dept. of Housing & Urban Development, & the Dept. of Commerce. I
will I will also defund the National Endowment of the Arts, National Endowment
of the Humanities & Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Bureau of Land
Management will be eliminated, & I will dissolve the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco & Firearms into the FBI. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Gun Control
The Second Amendment guarantees
the individual right to own, possess, and use personal firearms, and as
President I will ensure that this right is not compromised. Convicted felons
should forfeit their right to own firearms, but sportsmen, hunters, &
law-abiding Americans should be allowed to use guns for pleasure or personal or
family safety. Private ownership of guns gives citizens of this free republic
the means to protect life, liberty and property & I will fully &
faithfully protect that right. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Health Care
The campaign to legalize assisted
suicide and euthanasia of the mentally disabled, the gravely ill, and the
elderly, gains ground yearly. The Culture of Death must be fought on moral as
well as legal grounds. We need a President who will declare war on the Culture
of Death, not act as its principal collaborator, and fight from the day he takes
his oath of office, until he leaves office. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Schools
We will dismantle the education
bureaucracy, return the money to the taxpayers, so that education decisions are
made by parents, teachers and local taxpayers, not faraway bureaucrats or
federal judges. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Social Security
Americas seniors have already
made their sacrifices. As our 39 million elderly citizens enter the twilight of
their lives, we must keep faith with them by maximizing choice of coverage and
quality of care. Medicare must be redesigned, but herding seniors into a
socialized system dominated by HMOs and brokered by a Big Business, Big
Government partnership is not the answer. Neither is the irrational proposal to
massively expand a program already on life-support. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Tax Reform
The Era of Big Government is
alive & well - this year the federal tax bill will total $1.8 trillion.
Enough is enough. With the zeal of our patriot forefathers at Boston Harbor, we
must dump our tyrannical 7 million-word tax code & reclaim our economic
liberty. This exploitative tax system does not need reform; it needs to be
ripped out by the roots. The Buchanan tax plan will restore our resource base,
reclaim citizen control of national fiscal policy, & reduce the federal tax
collection bureaucracy. -- www.gopatgo2000.org
Welfare/Labor
[Buchanan] denounces Americas
leading corporations as "amoral behemoths," whose "loyalty is
only to the bottom line." He warns: "If they shut down factories here
to open overseas, they will pay a price for the readmission of their goods into
Americas market." -- Boston Globe Editorial 9/20/99
