"Super Tuesday" History: The phrase "Super Tuesday" was coined in 1988 when Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Georgia, decided to hold their presidential primaries on the same day. The states hoped doing this would increase the influence of the South in selecting Democratic party presidential candidates. When the idea failed, Kentucky, Alabama, and Georgia dropped out, but "Super Tuesday" has remained a part of the American political lexicon. [Back to Super Tuesday 1 - Mar. 7, 2000]
