House Passes Record $1.8 Trillion Budget Plan
Dateline: 03/24/00
By a narrow, party-line 211 - 207 roll call vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a record $1.8 trillion federal budget that includes a Republican backed $200 billion, five-year tax cut plan. House Democratic leaders say President Clinton will block the plan since the tax cut could result in another budget deficit.
The Republican-backed budget resolution, H. Con. Res. 290, increases defense spending some $16 billion in 2001 along with increases for education and medical research. It also allocates some $40 billion over five years to add prescription drug benefits and other program enhancements to Medicare.
As to Social Security, House Republican leaders promise their budget package would safeguard system reserves by using them to pay down over $1 trillion of the national debt.
House Democrats have consistently opposed the Republican's budget plan with their major objection focusing on the proposed over $200 billion tax cut.
