A perfect gift for a Million Moms

Dateline: 05/13/00

Opinion

The "experts" all seem to agree that the Mothers Day Million Moms march will not move Congress to pass new gun control laws.

Of course it won't, but don't blame the moms. In this presidential election year, Congress is in no hurry at all to pass new laws controlling guns or anything else that may have votes attached.

New gun laws are far from the only thing the million moms are marching for, anyway.

The million moms are marching for anything -- be it laws or just a sudden rush of general common sense -- that will protect America's children from being killed by other people using guns in all the wrong ways, in all the wrong places.

Gun lover or gun hater, how can you argue with that? One way or another, laws or no laws,  kids should not have to wear body armor to school. Not in America.

Trigger locks are nothing new. They have been on the market for years and most gun owners who also have kids in their homes already own and use trigger locks, or gun safes, or both. The vast majority of American gun owners know the right things to do and simply do them -- no laws required.

Maybe this year the perfect Mothers Day gift, not just a million, but for all of our moms, is a trigger lock on every gun in America.
