ATF Hits Mongols - 70 Guns Off Streets

A combined force of 700 Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) special agents and Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputies, on May 18, arrested 29 members of the Mongols, one of Southern California's most violent and criminally active motorcycle gangs.
According to an ATF press release of May 19, 2000, the combined ATF / LASD team simultaneously executed 69 search warrants in Oklahoma, Georgia, and in San Diego, Porterville and Frazier Park, California. Besides the arrest of 29 gang members, agents seized more than 70 firearms, including two machine guns and one "sawed-off" shotgun, ten pounds of narcotics, 21 stolen motorcycles, and in excess of $27,000 in cash.
Search warrants issued sought evidence of RICO and Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering (VICAR) violations, as well as a variety of crimes committed by gang members.
Considered one of the nation's most dangerous gangs, the Mongols claim about 200 members in 21 chapter clubs throughout the country,
The raid followed more than two years of investigation during which an ATF agent, working in deep cover, posed as a member of the Mongols.
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms director Bradley A. Buckles is quoted in the ATF release as saying, "This case reflects ATF's nationwide commitment to working with local law enforcement in the fight against violent crime and criminal organizations."
