Clinton - Putin Summit Results

Dateline: 06/04/2000

As President Clinton and new Russian President Vladimir Putin began their first-ever summit meeting in Moscow today, nuclear missiles and stopping missile attacks are expected to dominate the discussion. Both the U.S. and Russia continue to fear each other's nuclear arsenals, and since the assumed "end" of the Cold War, other nations such as China, India and Afghanistan have established nuclear weapons programs that cold threaten both nations.

As news comes from the ornate St Catherine's Hall in the Kremlin where the Presidents are meeting, updates on their progress will be posted here.

Destroy plutonium - Create joint missile launch alert system - 04/06/00
Presidents Clinton and Putin have signed an accord agreeing that both the U.S. and Russia should destroy their stockpiles of over 68 metric tons of "weapons-grade" plutonium over the next 20 years.

According to a CNN report, the 68 tons of plutonium to be destroyed under this landmark agreement would make enough to make 8,000 Hiroshima-sized nuclear bombs.

The Presidents also issued a joint statement concerning the sharing of technology and expertise necessary to develop a global "early warning" missile launch detection system.

Problems faced by both nations such as terrorism, crime and drug use were also discussed by Presidents Clinton and Putin.
