Government to Launch Super Web Site
Dateline: 06/24/00
Appearing on his first ever Webcast Saturday, President Clinton announced the launch in 90 days of a "super" Web site combining every online service of the U.S. federal government.
To be called firstgov.gov, President Clinton said of the new site, "When it's complete, firstgov will serve as a single point of entry to one of the largest, perhaps the most useful, collection of Web pages in the entire world."
Clinton referred to firstgov.gov as a natural continuation of his Administration's efforts provide Americans with a, "high-speed, high-tech, user-friendly government."
Most, if not all of the services to be offered on firstgov.gov are already online, including these listed by the President:
- Tracking you Social Security benefits
- Find a fuel-efficient car
- Learn how to invest wisely
- Check for flight delays
- Learn food safety tips
Basically, the firstgov.gov site will act as a "gateway" to the government services now found across 20,000 or so existing government Web sites.
Firstgov.gov will also, according to the White House, allow users to search half a billion government documents in less than a quarter of a second while dealing with at least 100 million such searches a day.
As to protecting visitors' privacy, Clinton promises that firstgov.gov will, "uphold the highest standards of protecting the privacy of its users."
