House Passes Three Emotion-charged Bills

Violence Against Women Act of 2000
(Read the bill via the Library of Congress)

Passed by a roll call vote of 415-3

Purpose: The bill extends and expands funding and programs authorized under the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. Additionally, the bill amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (the Act) to authorize appropriations for grants to combat violent crimes against women. Expands grant purposes to include training that addresses sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking for State, local, and tribal judicial personnel, as well as training of sexual assault forensic nurse examiners, and supporting the development of sexual assault response teams. The bill authorizes the spending of about $3.5 billion for related programs over the next five years.

Of the three bills referenced in House Passes Three Emotion-charged Bills, this is the only that will probably make it to the Senate for debate and approval before the end of this session of Congress, scheduled for Oct. 6. Unless the Violence Against Women Act of 2000 is passed, funding for many of the programs created by the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 will run out.
