Some Fed Web Sites May be Down for Y2K

Dateline: 12/29/99

Don't be alarmed if some Defense Department and US Military web sites don't answer the call this weekend.

The Pentagon announced today that the US military will shut down some of its web sites this Y2K  weekend to protect against computer hackers.

However, www.defenselink.mil - the Defense Department's main web site will remain in service according to Pentagon officials.

Joining the DoD, The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced that its flagship web site at www.opm.gov will bar access for "several hours" to many of its publicly available data banks.

If any additional lockouts or shutdowns are announced, they will be posted here.
