State Cigarette Taxes
New York's $1.11/Pack would be highest in US
Dateline: 12/21/99
Governor George Pataki and the New York state legislature yesterday (12/20/99) agreed to an increase in that state's sales tax on cigarettes to $1.11 per pack. The new rate would become the highest in the nation if legislation to be introduced later this week is approved.
The new rate, an increase of 55 cents per pack, is expected to raise about $400 million per year and allow funding of a program to provide health insurance coverage to over 1 million uninsured residents of New York State.
"Cigarette smoking has an enormous negative impact on people's health, and it drives up the cost of health insurance and health care for all of us," Governor Pataki told CNN on Monday.
Currently, Alaska and Hawaii charge the highest cigarette taxes in the US at $1.00 per pack.
