Contacting U.S. Government - Part I

Dateline: 01/09/98

Never in our history has it been so easy for so many citizens to access the structures and people of the Federal Government. The Web sites of most federal organizations now feature some sort of “people finder” function, as well as location, phone number, and email lists, or lookups.

In this two-part feature, we’ll look in detail at how to use the Internet to contact our government. Part I will include the President, Vice President, and Congress. Part II will cover some major government agencies and offices.

The President, First Lady, and Vice-President

Their email address are:

The President: president@whitehouse.gov
The First Lady: first.lady@whitehouse.gov
The Vice President: vice.president@whitehouse.gov

If you prefer to online forms, and your browser supports them, you can use these on the Whitehouse Web site:

Send Electronic Mail to the President
Send Electronic Mail to the First Lady
Send Electronic Mail to the Vice President

Note: According to 18 USC Sec. 871, it is a federal offense to send threatening messages to the President, Vice President, or anyone in the line of Presidential Succession.

Write Your Representative - Lookup
This function requires your Zipcode and, often, your Zip+4 number. For that, it sends you to a rather hard to use lookup feature from the Postal Service. Frankly, this thing is hard to use and not all Representatives participate. Here are two better ways to go:
