Finally, the National Taxpayer Advocate report presents recommended changes to the tax laws. New recommendations for 2000 included:
- Changes to the tax credit for elderly and disabled
- Military death benefits
- Retirement plan rules
Among several recommendations carried over from previous years were:
- Earned Income Tax Credit
- Alternative Minimum Tax
- Penalties and interest
- Expanded authority for the IRS to correct errors
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) was created as part of the Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 to help individuals solve ongoing tax problems with the IRS and to recommend changes that might prevent problems from happening in the future.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service resolved more than 250,000 cases last
