Cold War: Costs of Victory >Page 1, 2

Our Own Cold War Cleanup Costs

The United States has its own Cold War nuclear weapons act to clean up and the costs of doing so are, to say the least, impressive.

Public Law No: 106-60 - sets aside over $4.4 billion ($4,484,349,000) to the Department of Energy for "atomic energy defense environmental restoration and waste management activities," and another $112 million for "nuclear waste disposal activities to carry out the purposes of Public Law 97-425 "to provide for repositories for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste, transuranic waste, and spent nuclear fuel." (See Nuclear Waste: Coming sooner to a cave near you?)

Note: All of the funds listed above will not be spent during fiscal year 2000. Rather, the total budgeted funds are to remain available for the stated purposes until spent.

The Cold War will continue to cost us megatons of money for years to come. It's worth it.

Twice before,  world governments came to the brink of war and chose to take one last step. The Cold War taught governments they can turn around and walk away. Who won the cold war? Everybody.
