"Only the richest 2 percent of Americans will owe estate taxes. That amounted to 49,870 Americans in 1999. And nearly half the estate tax is paid by the 3,000 or so people who each year leave taxable estates of more than $5 million."

The Seniors Coalition (TSC), represented by some 4 million members nationwide, released the results of its 2001 Legislative Survey on Senior Citizens' Issues on April 17.

The following results represent the opinions of 72,147 respondents. 

1. Should The Seniors Coalition keep fighting all attempts to cut your CoLA? (Cost of Living Adjustments to Social Security benefits)

  • Yes 93 percent
  • No 3 percent
  • Undecided 4 percent

2. Should The Seniors Coalition continue to oppose "means testing" of Social Security? ("Means testing" can result in a reduction of Social Security benefits for persons who continue to work after retirement.)

  • Yes 90 percent
  • No 4 percent
  • Undecided 6 percent

3. Should The Seniors Coalition keep fighting to pass the strongest possible "Lock Box" law this year?

  • Yes 95 percent
  • No 1 percent
  • Undecided 4 percent

4. Should the Seniors Coalition fight for immediate repeal of the "Death Tax"?

  • Yes 93 percent
  • No (Less than 1 percent)
  • Undecided 7 percent

5. Should The Seniors Coalition fight for total repeal of the 1993 Clinton tax hike on Social Security benefits?
