Buying Government Surplus
Dateline: 07/17/98
Have you ever been in one of those "Army Surplus" stores and wonder where they get all that neat stuff? Well, chances are a lot of it came from the US Government's Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS), where you can get some of it, too.
The DRMS, under the Department of Defense - Defense Logistics Agency gets rid of excess and surplus military personal property. Whoa! Hold on there, Rambo. You won't find any F-16s, or Titan ICBMs on the block at DRMS. But, except for land, buildings and real estate, you're liable to find just about anything else like, furniture, appliances, camping gear, jeeps, computers, office supplies, radios, .... and on-and-on.
Why just a quick search of the DRMS General Public Search Form located 16 cargo trucks. The Search Form is easy to use, fast, includes some photos, and even allows you to place an online bid.
So, how do you go about bidding on all this great "stuff" you've found? As my dear ex-wife says, "Just stop! Read the instructions first." Which, are handily provided free and online at -- "How to Buy Surplus Personal Property From the US Department of Defense."
Have questions? The DRMS has a nice FAQ/Help page, and an extensive page of phone numbers and addresses.
The DRMS does not sell confiscated, or seized property, like boats and planes from drug busts. But, other Government Agencies do. You'll find some listed on my Auctions & Sales Net Links page.
