"For a person who wanted initially to abolish the present Electoral College system, I am becoming more convinced that modification would be more effective."

On Friday after the election, I stopped for lunch at a popular fast-food spot. Three of the regulars were holding down their regular station, the sunny corner booth. These three fellows are almost always talking about golf, the 49rs, or politics. However, on this Friday, just days after the most contentious and yet undecided presidential election in history, they were talking about -- the Constitution.

We may not realize it for a while, but America has come out ahead in this election.

We demonstrated to ourselves and to our government how much we really care about our vote, how we cast it, and how it is used in selecting our leaders.

The importance of a single vote out of 100 million is suddenly crystal clear and voter participation is bound to increase.

We have started a long-needed national dialog on how we vote that should generate an impetus for a modernized method of going to the polls.

Perhaps, at long last, TV network moguls will understand and respect the fact that most American's don't appreciate being told how we have all voted, until after we have all voted.

We are seeing the highest nationwide awareness of our Constitution and its processes since the Federalist Papers.

"'One principal told me to skip the part of the Constitution about electors because, "It doesn't make sense, nobody understands it, and it shouldn't be there, anyway.'" (From a former high school teacher)

As About World News Guide Keith Porter says in his article The Whole World is Watching, "U.S. citizens have been surprised and confused about many of the presidential election details." No doubt about that. Fortunately, most Americans deal with surprise and confusion with learning and understanding.
