For the first time in the history of the U.S. Congress, the popular program allowing citizens to order U.S. flags flown over the Capitol Building has been suspended. Why? The Capitol has simply run out of flags.

According to U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisconsin), the overwhelming nationwide demand for flags since the September 11 has left the Capitol's manufacturers and suppliers of flags unable to keep up with demand. According to a spokesman for the House Administration Committee, as of November 16, there are approximately 30,000 outstanding flag requests.

During much of late October, the finding of anthrax in House and Senate offices and mailrooms prevented Congress members from being able to fill flag requests from their constituents. Just as well, discovered lawmakers, since the flags were not there to mail, anyway.

"This is truly amazing," stated Rep. Sensenbrenner. "Ever since the authorities started quarantining congressional mail in October, I have been unable to process any flag requests. I had always believed that once the authorities determined the safest way to handle congressional mail, I would be able to respond to my constituents' letters, and thus fill my flag orders. I did not anticipate the Capitol running out of flags!"

Supplies of flags are short everywhere and vendors other than those who supply the Capitol have also been experiencing shortages. However, it is estimated that flags flown over the Capitol may not be available for another six to twelve months.

"This will be a major inconvenience," added Representative Sensenbrenner. "It is my sincere hope that this estimate does not hold true, and I urge people to check my website, which will be updated as information becomes available," he concluded.
