Welcome, Citizen Khrushchev

Guide Extra: 07/12/99

In November, 1991, former President Nixon, speaking at the dedication of the Ronald Reagan Library said, "Thirty-two years ago in Moscow, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev said to me, 'Your grandchildren will live under communism.' I replied, 'Your grandchildren will live in freedom.' At that time, I was sure he was wrong. I was not sure I was right. Now we know."

Today, Nikita Khrushchev's son, Sergei, was sworn in as an American citizen.

Sergei Khrushchev first came to Rhode Island in 1991 to teach Cold War history at Brown University.

"With my father's time, we lived in the Cold War," said Khrushchev shortly after being sworn in. "Now we are living in the same world. Both (the United States and Russia) have the market economy, so I don't see any problems."
