NOAA Corps --
America's 7th Service
Guide Extra: 07/25/99
During the search for John F. Kennedy Jr.'s downed aircraft, TV told us a lot about the NOAA ship RUDE and her advanced Side Scan Sonar system. But, you probably did not learn that the crew of RUDE are fully commissioned United States officers.
The crew of RUDE are part of the 299 member NOAA Corps, the smallest of the seven uniformed services of the United States.
NOAA Corp grew out of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USGS), the oldest scientific service in U.S. Government. Today, the NOAA Corps serves all components of NOAA, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Coast Guard, NASA, and the Department of State.
Representing the United States in many nations and on all the world's oceans, NOAA Corps operates NOAA's extensive fleet of research and survey vessels and aircraft.
