Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)
As the nation's
lead organization for interagency training of Federal law enforcement personnel,
the FLETC trains the majority of all Federal officers and agents. FLETC services
over 70 Federal agencies; provides training to State, local and international
police in selected advanced programs; graduates approximately 25, 000 students
annually; and is the largest law enforcement training establishment in the
country.
Food and Drug Administration
The FDA works to protect the health and
welfare of American consumers encompasses both science and law enforcement.
Whether by analyzing food samples, protecting the blood supply, investigating
drug tampering, or following up on import enforcement needs, or supporting
domestic inspections, FDA employees will do their part to protect the American
people.
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)
INS is charged with two
very distinct missions critical to Homeland Security. One function of the INS is
as an integrated law enforcement organization that can respond quickly to combat
terrorism, human smuggling operations and illegal immigration activities at the
border, ports of entry and in the interior of the United States. The INS
immigration services portion administers various immigration benefits, including
adjudicating petitions and applications for immigration, work permits, asylum
and the naturalization of qualified applicants for U.S. citizenship. The men and
women of the INS who serve in such positions as Border Patrol Agent, Immigration
Inspector and Adjudications Officer, as well as many other law enforcement and
immigration services positions, are vital to the security of our country.
U.S. Border Patrol is the arm of the INS that is in charge of border security between designated ports of entry. Border Patrol Agents detect and prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the U.S. utilizing both modern technology and ancient tracking skills. The Border Patrol makes over one million arrests and interdicts in excess of $1.5 billion in narcotics and illicit contraband per year.
Immigration Inspectors play a key role in maintaining our nation's security and work at U.S. airports, seaports, and land border crossings throughout our nation and its territories, as well as certain pre-inspection locations outside the United States. They are responsible for reviewing the documents of the millions of people who seek entry into the United States each year and prevent ineligible persons from entering
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
As one of the world's foremost
medical research centers, NIH serves as the Federal focal point for medical research in
the U.S. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will
lead the NIH in a national effort to build a new research program aimed at the
global problem of bio-terrorism and emerging infections. Consider joining the
scientific and medical forces of NIH programs to enhance our abilities to use
vaccines, drugs, and therapies to protect against various infectious agents.
Non-scientific support positions will also be available.
Secret Service
The United States Secret Service serves two distinct rolls: protection and
criminal
investigations. The Secret Service
provides protection for the President, Vice President and their families, heads
of state and others designated individuals, the White House, Vice President's
Residence, Foreign Missions and designated National Special Security Events. The
Secret Service enforces laws relating to counterfeiting of
U.S. currency and securities, and investigates various financial
crimes.
Bureau of Diplomatic Security
(DS)
As the security and law
enforcement component of the U.S. Department of State, DS provides a secure
environment for the conduct of U.S.. foreign policy on a global scale. DS
employs both Foreign Service and Civil Service employees. Foreign Service
categories include Special Agents, Security Engineering Officers, Security
Technical Specialists and Diplomatic Couriers. Civil Service categories include
Security Specialists, Investigators, Electronic Engineers and Technicians,
Computer Specialists, Budget Analysts and Foreign Affairs Specialists.
Department of the Interior
Interior is the guardian of the Nation's most precious natural and cultural
resources and the steward of its trust responsibilities to American Indians and
Alaska Natives. Career opportunities exist in units of the Interior Department
including, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Parks Service, U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Geological Survey and more.
