The construction of federal courthouses between 2000 and 2010 cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in unnecessary spending because the building were designed too large, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Here are seven examples of federal courthouses being overbuilt and overprices, according to the congressional watchdog agency.
1. Missouri Federal Courthouse
The Eagelton federal courthouse in St. Louis, Mo., cost taxpayers an extra $88.8 million dollars in construction costs because of some 398,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $2.8 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
2. New York Federal Courthouse
The D’Amato federal courthouse in Islip, N.Y., cost taxpayers an extra $74.7 million dollars in construction costs because of some 282,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $3.8 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
3. Washington, D.C., Federal Courthouse
The Bryant U.S. Courthouse Annex in Washington, D.C., cost taxpayers an extra $56.5 million dollars in construction costs because of some 218,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $4 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
4. Florida Federal Courthouse
The Ferguson federal courthouse in Miami, Fla., cost taxpayers an extra $48.5 million dollars in construction costs because of some 238,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $3.8 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
5. California Federal Courthouse
The Coyle federal courthouse in Fresno, Calif., cost taxpayers an extra $34.9 million dollars in construction costs because of some 131,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $2.2 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
6. Arizona Federal Courthouse
The DeConcini federal courthouse in Tucson, Ariz., cost taxpayers an extra $17.2 million dollars in construction costs because of some 78,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $1.3 million a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
7. Missouri Federal Courthouse
The Limbaugh, Sr. federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau, Mo., cost taxpayers an extra $7.4 million dollars in construction costs because of some 26,000 square feet in unnecessary space, according to the GAO.
The extra space at the federal courthouse costs taxpayers an estimated $200,000 a year in rent, operations and maintenance costs.
