Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator, one of the last remaining moderates in the nation's Capitol, couldn't pull the rabbit out of the hat for a sixth time. He lost the Democratic primary in 2010 after switching parties, a move he openly admitted was designed to get him re-elected.
