How tight is security for Obama?

Workers in India cut down all the coconuts from scores of coconut trees near Mumbai's Gandhi museum ahead of President Barack Obama's November 2010. Those in charge of security for Obama worried the coconuts would fall and hit the leader of the free world smack on the noggin.

"We told the authorities to remove the dry coconuts from trees near the building. Why take a chance?" a museum official told the BBC.

Falling coconuts have been known to kill people in India.

Security for Obama had a right to be concerned.

Dr. Peter Barss, the author of a 1984 article in the Journal of Trauma called Injuries Due to Falling Coconuts, wrote that most coconut palm trees reach more than 80 feet high. Coconuts can weigh as much as 4 to 5 pounds.

His warned that a coconut falling from a tree that high would have velocity of 50 mph and a force of as much as 2,000 pounds.

That's just plain nuts.
