Former U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, America’s oldest and longest-serving senator, has died at 100. "It was a century ago when Mark Twain was alive and Teddy Roosevelt was president and James Strom Thurmond was born in South Carolina and at that time began a life really unmatched in public service," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist in a speech on the floor of the Senate, where he announced Thurmond's death.
