Ever Wanted a Lighthouse? Here's Your Chance

The General Service Administration (GSA) announced last week that it will soon issue Notices of Availability (NOAs) for 18 historic lighthouses located across the country. The lighthouses will be made available at no cost under the authority of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 (NHLPA) to qualified federal agencies, state and local governments or non-profit organizations.

Also in the planning stage is a sale to the public of five additional lighthouses, including four with historic significance, in Maine, Maryland and Rhode Island.

The GSA, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Park Service will be working with State Historic Preservation Officers to ensure historic preservation measures are in place to protect the lighthouses. If qualified applicants for any of the lighthouses cannot be found, the GSA will sell them in a competitive public auction.

Notices for available lighthouses as well as those scheduled for public sale will be listed in local newspapers and on GSA’s public website. A complete list of the lighthouses, as they become available, can be found at: http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/nhlpa/noas2006.htm
